With one or two exceptions (one of them being the sekrit bonus super-hard dungeon), fighting pylons is doing it wrong.īut for Geneforge 2-5, I am strongly considering just making pylons not attackable. The Geneforge games all have stealth/mechanics routes, and pylons enforce them. Originally posted by Spiderweb:I put in many warnings that fighting pylons is a bad idea. (So I don't, but I don't like the exploring freely means I get less XP than doing the same things in a fixed order.) Right now you can play the game like a kind of puzzle where you get more XP by only fighting stuff at your own level, and doing things like waiting until the end-game to read all the books (that give fixed XP.) But doing that kind of thing isn't any fun at all. I would much prefer a system where experience didn't scale, you just needed lots more to reach high level. (Then you'd gain a level in the first, and the second area would then be below your level.) Same for quest rewards. Upshot is that if there's an area at your level, and an area 1 above your level, you'll probably get more XP if you do them in order than if you do the higher level one first. When you fight stuff above your level you get more XP, but it doesn't scale up nearly as fast. enemy level, and when you're higher level it scales down very sharply. The experience thing is a more general frustration: it's purely based on your level vs. (Magic creations resist magic, battle creations resist physical attacks, fire creations resist nothing. They're fun, but the game doesn't spell out that these are in some ways the squishiest creations. I know there are ways to turn pylons off (SOME ofthe time), but you are FORCED to fight them until you find them, since you can't avoid them all). Also, this game requires a bit of trial & error, and like many RPGs, we're all subject to RNG whims for fights & encounters. I'm not arguing they aren't a PITA until you can get certain builds "online". But as to the pylon issue, depending on your class, gear and consumables, there are ways to deal w/ them. Well, I'm attempting a solo Torment run, so I'm afraid save scum is part of that equation, like it or not. Also, if the game demands you to save scum to bypass an obstacle, then there's a problem with balancing. Finding said servant mind is the pain in the ass. Not getting stun-locked and vaporized will be the key, but that's what quick saves are for. I'm about to find out if a solo Guardian can do this w/out destroying them. If you have halfway decent Mechanics, you can get to the Servant Mind there who makes the entire problem go away (in those maps). If you are talking about the various mines maps, you need to get by no more than 3 pylons in the Eastern Mines before you've entered the Core. You do need to be able to take a blast or 2 a few times before, mostly in combat mode, getting to said controls. Originally posted by BenSt88:If you are talking about entering the Eastern Docks from the N, you don't need to fight any of them to get to the controls to turn them off. A mere 2xp per pylon and I've gotten more xp by killing easier stuff I know there are ways to turn pylons off (SOME ofthe time), but you are FORCED to fight them until you find them, since you can't avoid them all).Īlso, the experience you get is ridiculously low. I'm focusing on fire shapping because I thought it was the coolest one. Fortunately, from what I recall, the rest of the games in the series didn't have nearly as many. Guardians: It pays to save up your Reaper batons for shooting pylons.īut yeah, I wouldn't mind having fewer pylons around. (Actually, Shapers can also do that if they invest in battle magic, but mine didn't.) Zero risk, just might have to use an essence pod now and again. The pylon will typically focus on the shielded creation and go down without hurting the rest of your group.Īgents: They can destroy them from out of range using Air Shock. Shapers: I recommend sending one tough creation (Glaakh is nice because of magic resistance) charging in with Essence Shield whilst shooting them with the rest. That said, depending on class and difficulty level there are various ways to deal with them. Some are in optional areas you can skip completely. There are often alternate routes, or ways to disable them. Originally posted by Iguana-on-a-stick:You rarely HAVE to face pylons.
